Decorative apple, (Malus ‘Red Sentinel’)
Height: 170/200
Fruit apple with exceptional decorative value. The variety 'Red Sentinel' originates from New Zealand. It is an ideal choice for yards, where decoration has to be kept to a minimum. The maximum height, which the different species can reach is 6m, and the diameter of the crown rarely exceeds 4m. In the decorative varieties, the shape of the crown is oval, although they also look very good when formed in a round bushy habit. Most varieties have upright crowns, but there are also those with a weeping form. The white flowers of this variety, along with the red glossy berries, give the space a unique charm. The decorative Japanese apple adapts well to our conditions and grows without a problem in our country, withstanding even severe colds. They also have few requirements for the location, but it is still good that they get enough sunlight. It prefers well-drained and enriched soil. It can be moist, but not bogged down. It should not be allowed to dry out, as this may cause some of the leaves to dry up. Before planting, it is good to carry out pre-planting fertilization - equal amounts of well-rotted manure are placed in the dug pit, compost or leaf peat. Sand can be added if desired. A portion of the previously excavated earth is placed on top of the mixture, to avoid direct contact with the roots. Watering in summer is done once or twice a week, as suitable time is morning or evening. To have an attractive look, it needs to be pruned, to give a more interesting crown shape and abundant flowering in early spring.
