Photenia / foʊˈtɪni, f – / is a genus of about 40–60 species of small trees and large shrubs, but the taxonomy has soon changed significantly, with the genera Heteromeles, Stranvaesia and Aronia. sometimes included in Photinia.
They are part of the rose family (Rosaceae) and are related to the apple. The botanical genus name is derived from the Greek word photeinos for shiny and refers to the often shiny leaves. Most species are evergreen, but deciduous species are also found. The small apple fruit is about the size of 4 to 12 mm and is formed in large quantities. They ripen in autumn and often remain hanging on the bush, until they reach winter. The fruits are used as food by birds, which shed the seeds with their droppings and thus distribute the plant.
