The common hornbill (Birch wood) is a broad-leaved deciduous tree with a highly developed root system, giving it resistance to adverse external conditions. Optimally, common hornbeam grows in sandy gray forest soils with moderate moisture.

Common hornbeam is one of the most common tree species in Bulgaria, but despite this, it rarely forms large communities and forest massifs. It is mainly found as a mixed species in beech and oak forests at an altitude of up to 1500 m. It is most common in areas with an altitude of 500 to 1000 meters, where it is found together with oak and linden species.

The common hornbill has a straight trunk, covered with gray uncracked bark. The well-developed crown is characteristic of the species. The leaves of the plant are simple and egg-shaped. In length they reach up to 12-13 cm, and on the width to 5-8 cm. Each leaf petura has 10-15 pairs of lateral veins. The edge of the leaf is doubly toothed, with one lateral vein or its branch reaching up to each tooth.

As well as other representatives of the Brezovi family, common hornbeam is a monoecious plant. It has bisexual colors, which are collected in male and female inflorescences — fringes. Male flowers lack perianth and bracts. Instead, the male flowers have a red-brown scale, which covers from 4 to 12 stamens. The male fringes are oblong in shape and are approx 6 cm. The female flowers are collected in groups of two and are covered with a scale. Individual groups are collected in female fronds. It is characteristic of the female fringes of the common hornbill, that when they are formed in the spring they are much smaller than the male fringes, but subsequently they grow and attain length 15 cm.
