The hosta is characterized by large and shiny leaves, which appear in late spring and quickly become the dominant feature of the plant. Oval leaves bring additional texture to the garden landscape, and the lush greenery gives it a slight dramatic touch. The big ones, beautiful flowers resemble those of lilies and can be white or tinged with pale purple or violet, with the only highly fragrant species being the August lily (Hosta plantaginea), whose flowers fill the whole garden with an intoxicating fragrance. Another characteristic feature of the species is, that its flowers open at night and close in the morning.
