Berberis is a shrub with a very high decorative value. During the summer, under the hot rays of the sun its leaves turn crimson red and attract the eye from afar. Be careful with it, as sharp spines are hidden under its petals. It is not pretentious to soils, but we recommend that you plant it in sunny places in the garden, so that it can be colored well during the warm months. Left in the shade, loses its red color and turns green. It blooms with small yellow flowers in April-May. The variety thunbergii 'Golden Ring’ has sharper leaves and a thin yellow edging along the edge of the leaf. In autumn, the whole leaf turns red. Suitable for making hedges, as well as for trimming into arbitrary shapes.

Barberry thunbergii is deciduous (in a very warm climate it could be evergreen), unpretentious in terms of soils and slow-growing. Sour thistle is a very suitable plant for hedges, just keep in mind, that it is a real thorn and prick. It grows best in full sun, but it can also grow in the shade.
