Smelly willow, (Elaeagnus angustifolia)
Height: 250/300
Eleagnus is a tree that is grown as a solitary and group plantation. It is a tree or tall shrub up to 8-10 m with sharp spines on the branches. The leaves are lanceolate-elliptical with a silvery-white color. The flowers are highly fragrant, outside silvery, inside orange-yellow. They appear on 1-3 in the axils of the leaves. Blooms in June-July. The fruit is an oblong stone with a silver-white color. Seeds are sown in autumn or stratified. It grows on the limestone rocks near Varna. It is highly drought resistant, light-loving, smoke-resistant and undemanding to the soil type. It tolerates trimming well and is therefore used to build beautiful hedges.
Eleagnus argentea is a tree up to 4 m, without spines. Forms a widely spreading crown. The branches are covered with reddish-brown scales. Its leaves are ovate, leathery on both sides silver. Its small flowers are highly fragrant, outside silvery, inside yellow. They are single or multiple 2-3 in the axils of the leaves. Blooms in May-June. The fruits are silvery, semi-meat bones. The seeds must be stratified. In our country, it is grown by the sea. There, this species shows complete winter hardiness, but requires a more humid climate. It bears fruit abundantly. Tolerates shading very well, and it is undemanding to soil fertility. Produces many shoots.
