The Cercis (Cercis), better known in Bulgaria as wild carob, is a genus of tree or shrub from the Legume family (Fabaceae).
It is also called the Judas tree. There is a myth, that Judas Iscariot hanged himself from a tree of this kind, causing its white flowers to turn red
It is distributed mainly in the Mediterranean, North America, Southeast and East Asia.
The species is cauliflorous - the flowers emerge from the trunk or from old branches, and later leaves. In Bulgaria it is found in a wild state and is used for park landscaping because of its high decorative value throughout the growing season.
