Thuja Emerald, Thuja occ. 'Emerald’
Wedding (Thuja) is a genus of conifers in the Cypress family (Cupressaceae). There are six species in this genus, two originating from North America and four from East Asia. It is sometimes indicated, that there are five species, since the eastern thuja (Thuja orientalis) separated into a separate genus, called Biotaor also Platycladus. Thujas are known as the "tree of life" (in Latin: the tree of Life), because they are evergreen.
The leaves are evergreen, placed two by two opposite and are flattened like a ladder, four rows in one branch (as are the leaves of the cypresses).
Three species of the genus are cultivated in Bulgaria. These are the eastern thuja (T. orientalis) from China, western thuja (T. occidentalis) from the eastern parts of North America and the giant thuja (T. folded or also T. gigantea) from the Pacific parts of North America. The other Asian species (T. standishii, T. koraiensis and T. sitchuenensis) are too heat-loving and cannot successfully withstand the conditions in Bulgaria, therefore, they are only grown in limited numbers in some botanical gardens.
