This dwarf birch is extremely cold hardy and can be enjoyed both in a pot and in the garden! On new growth, leaves appear in shades of yellow, red and orange. You can let it grow naturally, forming attractive yellow balls or cut it into a form as a low hedge. Slow growing dwarf variety, which remains much smaller than its tree relatives.
Dwarf Birch also called swamp birch because of its natural habitat, is a native shrub of the Northern Hemisphere – North America, Greenland and Northern Eurasia. It forms a low, open to spreading shrubs with small leaves and thin and fragile twigs.
It makes approx 2 cm wide, kidney-shaped leaves toothed at the margins. They appear deep orange and mature to soft golden yellows and yellow greens. Trimming is best done in spring or mid-summer. Due to its compact size and slow growth, it is often trained into a small tree, by grafting on short stems.
Jewel birch is not vain about the type of soil – it is widely adaptable, under conditions, that it is evenly moist or wet ground. Due to its small size, it is often used in larger climbers, but our plant died there of drought. It is hardy down to -45°C and is suitable for growing in larger outdoor pots with occasional water inspection .
